Peru Reduces CO2 Emissions by 13.5 Million Tons with CNG Use in Transport

According to a study conducted by the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin), the introduction of natural gas for vehicles in Peru has led to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. The study reveals that, between 2006 and 2019, the use of natural gas mitigated 13.5 million tons of CO2, which would have otherwise accumulated in the atmosphere.

Furthermore, if the CO2 emissions that have been mitigated due to the consumption of natural gas in the vehicle fleet during the analysis period were valued, they would amount to USD 255 million in 2019.

The study also highlights the cost difference between CNG and other fuels, demonstrating that, on average, CNG is 70% cheaper than diesel, 70% less expensive than gasoline, and 33% less costly than LPG.

Currently, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) is implementing a budget of 200 million soles allocated to the FISE NGV Savings program. This program provides a Discount Bonus of S/ 2,000 on the cost of the conversion service for light vehicles that use LPG, and the remaining balance of the conversion service cost can be financed in up to 36 months without interest.
