Magallanes Authorities Accelerate CNG Project for Vehicles

Authorities of the Magallanes Region, Chile, are working to speed up the project that seeks to expand the range of vehicles that can be converted to compressed natural gas (CNG), up to 15 years old.

The Treasury Secretary, Christian Gallardo, declared that “we are currently in the feasibility process of the Ministry of Transport. It is part of the rigorous process to be able to give the green light to the CNG project, which we have been working on with congresswoman Javiera Morales; she will meet next week with the Minister of the portfolio to discuss the issue and give priority to the feasibility study.”

He added: “We know that time is pressing, therefore, once this procedure is over, we would be in a position to deliver the proposal to President Gabriel Boric, who during his visit to Magallanes left us the task of making every possible effort to make this citizen demand a reality in our region.”

“This is one of the ways we have to lower transportation costs, therefore, the cost of living for people and lighten pockets so that these family resources can be used for other basic needs such as food, health, bills. or whatever they deem convenient.”

The congresswoman Javiera Morales indicated: “Indeed, we are working together with the Treasury Department to speed up the technical reports that are required and implement this measure as soon as possible. We know that it is an urgency for the men and women of Magallan, since as winter approaches, the bills for basic services rise and it is urgent to lower the costs of living”.

According to Gallardo, the project aims to modify the current regulations on the use of compressed natural gas in automobiles. “The aim is to change Article 1 bis of Decree 55, which currently allows the use of CNG for private vehicles whose age does not exceed five years, seeking to extend said restriction from 5 years to 15 years for the units of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region. There is already a prior technical report from the Transport Secretary, Rodrigo Hernández, who indicates that there is the feasibility of making this modification that would generate about 80% savings in fuel for the citizens of the Magallanes Region.
