Al Ain Zoo has taken a major step forward in protecting the environment and supporting sustainable transportation initiatives by converting 10% of its fleet of 99 vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) by 2022. This is the first phase of a larger plan to have 25% of its vehicles powered by CNG by 2030.
Mohammed Sarhan Alhmoudi, Acting Director of Environment, Health and Safety at Al Ain Zoo, said that this move will reduce the operating cost of the fleet by more than 50% compared to gasoline. He stated that the move is in line with the UAE’s strategic goals to achieve fuel efficiency standards in line with the National Climate Change Plan (2017-2050), the Abu Dhabi Government’s targets of convert 25% of government vehicles to run on CNG by 2030, as well as the transportation plan of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the UAE.
Al Ain Zoo has partnered with Emirates Transport to facilitate the transition to natural gas. Through four stations in Al Ain, Zakher, Industrial Area and Al Markhaniyyah, the Zoo is able to refuel its vehicles with CNG at approved centers across the city.
The transition to natural gas is an important step for Al Ain Zoo as it furthers its commitment to protecting the environment, reducing its operating costs, and supporting sustainable transportation initiatives. Furthermore, it allows the Zoo to contribute to the UAE’s climate change goals and the Abu Dhabi Government’s targets of converting 25% of government vehicles to run on CNG by 2030.
